GABA receptors are activated by the major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the CNS, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA):

  • GABAA receptors are ligand gated ion channels; they are pentameric proteins and are made up of 5 subunits belonging to different families (α1-6, β1-3, γ1-3, δ, π, ε, ρ, θ). They contain an integral chloride channel, and have modulatory sites for barbiturates, neurosteroids, ethanol and benzodiazepines.
  • GABAB receptors are metabotropic G-protein-coupled receptors; they exist as heterodimers of GABAB1 and GABAB2 subunits, both of which are required for receptor function. The GABAB1 subunit is responsible for binding GABA and the GABAB2 subunit interacts with the G protein.
