Ionotropic glutamate receptor nomenclature

Ionotropic glutamate receptor nomenclature can be confusing, so here is a handy table to guide you through the past and present nomenclature. Bold text indicates the latest nomenclature adopted by IUHPAR (International Union of basic and clinical pharmacology) in 2008.

NMDA Receptors

  • NR1 = GluN1
  • NR2A = GluN2A
  • NR2B = GluN2B
  • NR2C = GluN2C
  • NR2D = GluN2D
  • NR3A = GluN3A
  • NR3B = GluN3B

AMPA receptors

  • GluRA = GluR1 = GluA1
  • GluRB = GluR2 = GluA2
  • GluRC = GluR3 = GluA3
  • GluRD = GluR4 = GluA4

Kainate Receptors

  • GluR5 = GLUK5 = GluK1
  • GluR6 = GLUK6 = GluK2
  • GluR7 = GLUK7 = GluK3
  • KA1 = GLUK1 = GluK4
  • KA2 = GLUK2 = GluK5

Delta Receptors

  • δ1 = GluD1
  • δ2 = GluD2
